Texas YMCA hires Hartman as CEO

Mar 04, 2024 in Web News

AUSTIN – Texas YMCAs have served Texas for nearly 150 years. Today local Ys serve more than 1 million Texans each year across more than 200 communities. The Y is the state’s largest provider of child care, health and wellness and water safety programs, and its statewide Youth & Government program teaches hands-on civic engagement to more than 2,000 middle- and high-school students each year.

Drawing on lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath, many Ys are rapidly expanding their focus to address emerging needs like workforce development, immigrant & refugee support, affordable housing, food security, mental health and sustainability.

To guide this evolution and expand the Y’s presence statewide, the Texas State Alliance of YMCAs (“Texas YMCA”) is hiring Greg Hartman, Chief Operating Officer at Texas A&M and a former CEO of hospitals at Ascension/Seton.

“The Y exists to fill community needs,” said Eric Tucker, Chair of the Texas State Alliance and CEO of the Arlington-Mansfield YMCA. “Today, we see that communities need better access to child care, better access to job skills and a place where all people can feel welcome and supported. Greg is the type of leader who can help align the Y at the state and federal level in addition to our local communities.”

As the state’s largest provider of child care & early education, serving more than 25,000 kids each day through preschool, afterschool and camp, the Y has been leading conversations to develop a new business model for the entire sector.

“We know it’s going to take government, businesses, nonprofits and other partners to come to the table ready to find a solution,” Tucker said. “Greg can help convene those conversations.”

The Y is also working closely with the Texas Workforce Commission on solutions for child care, as well as workforce development strategies to support the state’s projected growth.

In the 2023 Legislative Session, the Y stepped up its advocacy efforts to support several successful bills, including HB1615 (sponsored by Rep. Angie Chen-Button of Garland) to increase the availability of child care and prekindergarten programs. The Y also supported HB59, aka “Cati’s Law,” (introduced by Rep. Vikki Goodwin of Austin) to strengthen water safety regulations among child care providers.

“Considering our statewide scope and how many people we serve, we have an obligation to be more visible at the State Capitol to collaborate on solutions like developing a sustainable child care business model,” said Kathy Kuras, Chair of the Texas Y’s Public Policy Committee and President & CEO of the Greater Austin YMCA. “Greg will ensure that we’re at the right tables to lend our voice.”

Hartman, a San Antonio native, previously served as Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President of the Texas A&M University and of the Texas A&M Health Science Center, as well as Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives of the Texas A&M University System.

“There’s no other organization in Texas that can do what the Y can,” Hartman said. “We have the potential to improve the quality of life for millions of people. I’m honored to play a small role in helping YMCAs continue to collaborate with Texas communities to innovate and grow.”

Before joining Texas A&M, Hartman served in a number of executive roles for nearly 15 years with Ascension/Seton Healthcare, the $2 billion hospital system in Central Texas. This included as CEO of the system’s two largest hospitals, overseeing academic and research programs affiliated with the University of Texas System and responsibility for public partnerships and the system’s foundations. He was heavily involved in the creation of a unique collaboration between Seton, the University of Texas at Austin and the UT System to bring translational medical research and academic medicine to Austin.

“Greg has a knack for building consensus and a leadership style that seems almost effortless,” said John Sharp, Texas A&M Chancellor and longtime colleague of Hartman’s going back to his role as Railroad Commissioner and Comptroller in the 1990s. “But beneath the surface is an intensity and determination that help him get things done. I can’t wait to see what he’ll help the Y accomplish.”

Texas YMCAs contribute more than $400 million to the state economy and employee more than 15,000 staff, many of them teens in their first jobs and young adults. Texas Ys also provide more than $30 million in financial assistance each year for programs like child care, chronic disease prevention and management, and drowning prevention, thanks to the support of individual donors and foundations as well as corporate and governmental partners.

Martial Arts are active classes to help you to get involved and moving. Martial arts is an assortment of ancient practices that have a rich and interesting history. The knowledge you will learn in these classes will be irreplaceable. Each person will start with the basic skills or depending upon their skill level.

It's enjoyable to be with others of the same interests, skill level, and age. As you grow with others to achieve your personal goals. You learn a combination of various cultures and histories as you learn ancient ways of combat. This will teach lessons in discipline, balance, and focus to provide you with the best possible results.

At the YMCA of Odessa Texas, we focus on emphasizing discipline, mental attitude, goal setting and respect in every youth martial arts class. All martial arts classes are grouped by age and skill level. Martial arts classes begin and end with warm-ups, stretching, and meditation. Participants learn beginning skills for striking, blocking, and movement in addition to proper falling techniques and practical self-defense techniques.

Strength: Students can become stronger, flexibility, confidence and self-esteem while developing overall physical fitness. As students progress, they will learn to coordinate speed and power, and develop the concentration to focus all of your body's strength into a small, hard striking surface with the hand or the heel of the foot.

Self-Defense: Knowing you can defend yourself, your confidence will grow. Students of all ages can apply the lessons learned to maintaining their personal safety.

Self-Confidence: As you accomplish new goals, your confidence level increases. It instills a sense of discipline and self-confidence that can carry over to all aspects of your life.
